Steps to Becoming a RAT
Step One: Join the Club
What you do: Download a membership form or pick one up from The Starting Block. Dues for a year are only $20 for an individual $30 for a family. What you get:
- You can join the discussion forum.
- You can join in the "social" workouts: Swim Fri 6:00pm at Jade/Juniper Bay, Bike: Sat 8:00am at the Performing Arts Centre, Run: Sun 7:00am at various locations--check the coaches’ calendar or the discussion forum for details.
- You can join in the club’s social activities:
- Spring BBQ in May
- Christmas party
- Post Ironman stories and potluck dinner every September
- Various special workouts with food afterwards
- Club members have the privilege and duty to volunteer to help out at one (or more) of the three races we put on every year
- The Starting Block 10K run (February)
- The Kal RATS Triathlon (July)
- The Kal Park cross country run (November)
- Club workout and race clothing is available for purchase usually once or twice per year-- watch the website and discussion forum for details.
- Full website access--some areas of the website are only available to club members: coaching tips, member profiles and blogs, etc.
** Please note that no non-member has ever been asked to leave a club social event, so if you aren’t sure if we’re the club for you, come on out and give us a try!
Step Two: Coaching Options
The Kal RATS has some of the best coaches in the province willing to share their expertise with club members (Tri BC membership is required for coached work outs). To be able to join the coached workouts:
- Become a TriBC member--this is required for liability insurance purposes. Kal RATS get a discount ($10) on their TriBC membership--email the club president for this year’s password to get your discount. Register online at www.tribc.org with the code.
- Head down to The Starting Block to pick up (or download from the website) a coaching information form. The coaches use this information to better tailor the workouts to meet your needs.
- You can purchase a 10 time "punch pass", or a monthly, or yearly pass for the workouts at The Starting Block.
Step Three: Join the Executive
Our Annual General Meeting is held in March every year. The executive members are volunteered or nominated and elected at that meeting and help plan the future of the club. It’s your club, so even if you aren’t ready to jump in at the executive level, be sure to let the current executive members know what you want our club to be like and what you want to get out of being a RAT and together we can make things happen!
